Bis Bald, a fanfare for orchestra
(2008)
I used to be acting principal violist in the Berkeley Symphony for a couple of years. Prior to that, I was in the viola section. Conductor Kent Nagano was the first major musical figure who took an interest in my music. He commissioned my Five Pieces for Orchestra, as well as my oratorio Bitter Harvest. On the occasion of his departure from the Berkeley Symphony in 2008, I was commissioned to compose a short piece to commemorate his tremendous tenure with the orchestra over the many decades he had worked with this musical institution and the musical community at large. Although Kent was moving onto the international scene, his imprint and legacy in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Berkeley especially, would be enduring and profound. Bis Bald (“until soon” in German) is a sweeping work that thrusts the listener along joyously, with the same energy and generousity that ent always did with us in the orchestra.
Work (score & parts) available for rental.
